Abandonment: Middle Butte Mine - Mojave, California

Abandoned Mine Building - Mojave, California
The Middle Butte Mine sits abandoned on a hill near the desert town of Mojave, California. It operated from 1935 until 1942 and produced both gold and silver.

The mine is an open pit type. I guess by the mid-1930's they'd figured out that it is more efficient to dig the hill out than to dig tunnels into it.

Not much is left of the mine. One structure still stands. I believe that it was once a larger structure made mostly of wood. The concrete part is all that's left. An old road is still visible although it is now overgrown, slowly returning to the desert.

I used a Nokia Lumia 1020 to capture these photographs.
