Horsing Around - A Girl's First Horseback Riding Lesson

Lonesome Horse - Tehachapi, California
My daughter loves horses. I mean, she really loves horses. She loves horses perhaps even more than I love photography.

She would love nothing more than to have a horse of her own. That's her dream. But we are not going to have a horse. Even if we wanted, we don't have the space, time or money.

For our daughter's seventh birthday we decided to do the next best thing: horseback riding lessons. Someone nearby has horses and teaches children how to care for and ride them.

We kept it a surprise. We didn't tell her what her gift was until we were on our way. She was both excited and nervous when we finally told her.

The horse's name is Lonesome. He's friendly and gentle--perfect for a young cowgirl. The lesson lasted an hour. My daughter had a great time and learned so much. This really was a dream-come-true for her.

I brought along my Nikon D3300 DSLR and Nikkor 55-200mm AF-S DX f/4-5.6G ED lens. The photographs were post-processed using Alien Skin Exposure 6 software (Exposure 7 is now available, by the way).
